  • Small bowl
  • Parchment paper
  • Baking sheet

Ingredients

Bread Dough

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2.25 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup warm water (105-115°F)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

Brimstone Topping

  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 2 tablespoons black sesame seeds for garnish

Instructions

Dough Preparation

  • In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, yeast, sugar, and salt.
  • Gradually add the warm water and olive oil, mixing until a shaggy dough forms.
  • Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  • Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.

Brimstone Topping & Baking

  • While the dough is rising, prepare the brimstone topping by combining the melted butter, garlic powder, smoked paprika, and red pepper flakes in a small bowl.
  • Once the dough has risen, gently punch it down and shape it into a round or oval loaf. Place it on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  • Brush the entire surface of the loaf with the brimstone topping, ensuring even coverage.
  • Sprinkle generously with black sesame seeds for a dramatic effect.
  • Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown and hollow-sounding when tapped.
  • Let the bread cool on a wire rack before slicing and serving. Enjoy your spooky treat!

Notes

For an extra spooky touch, you can shape the bread into a monster's claw or another Halloween-themed design before baking. Serve warm with butter or your favorite dip.
