Ingredients
  

Apple Mixture

  • 4-5 medium apples Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Fuji
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar plus extra for the topping
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour plus extra for the topping
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg optional

Topping

  • 1/2 cup rolled oats do not use instant oats
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup cold butter cut into small cubes

Instructions
 

Prepare the Apples

  • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Peel, core, and slice apples into 1/4-inch pieces.
  • In a large bowl, toss apple slices with granulated sugar, all-purpose flour, cinnamon, and nutmeg until coated.
  • Pour the apple mixture into an 8x8 inch baking dish.

Make the Topping

  • In a separate bowl, combine rolled oats, brown sugar, and remaining all-purpose flour.
  • Cut cold, cubed butter into the dry ingredients until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

Assemble and Bake

  • Sprinkle the oat topping evenly over the prepared apples in the baking dish.

Bake

  • Bake for 30-35 minutes until the apple filling is bubbly and tender, and the topping is golden brown and crisp.

Cool Slightly

  • Let the crisp cool for at least 10-15 minutes before serving to allow the filling to set.

Notes

For best results, use a mix of apple varieties for a more complex flavor. You can also add a pinch of salt to the topping for enhanced flavor.
