Equipment

  • large skillet
  • baking sheet
  • oven
  • microwave

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 1 lb lean ground beef
  • 1 packet (1 oz) taco seasoning mix
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 large bag (approx. 13-16 oz) tortilla chips
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese or a Mexican blend

Optional Toppings

  • salsa
  • sour cream
  • guacamole
  • jalapeños fresh or pickled
  • diced tomatoes
  • chopped red onion
  • black olives
  • fresh cilantro

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a large skillet, cook the ground beef over medium-high heat, breaking it up until no pink remains, then drain excess grease.

Seasoning & Assembly

  • Stir in taco seasoning and water, simmer for 2-3 minutes until liquid absorbs and beef is coated, then remove from heat.
  • Spread half of the tortilla chips on a baking sheet, then top with half of the seasoned ground beef and half of the shredded cheese.
  • Layer the remaining chips, ground beef, and cheese to ensure even distribution.

Melting the Cheese

  • For crispy chips, bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 5-8 minutes until bubbly and melted, monitoring closely to prevent burning.
  • Alternatively, for a quicker option, microwave on high for 2-3 minutes until the cheese is fully melted, though chips may not be as crispy.

Serving

  • Transfer nachos to a serving platter or serve directly, then immediately add your desired toppings and enjoy.

Notes

For best results, use good quality tortilla chips that can withstand the weight of the toppings. Customize your nachos with your favorite toppings to suit your taste. Serve immediately for optimal crispness and melted cheese.
