  • 1 large yellow onion
  • 1 green bell pepper
  • 1 pound lean ground beef 80/20 works great for flavor
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt

  • 6 slices provolone cheese or Cheez Whiz for an authentic twist!
  • 4 hoagie rolls or sub buns split and lightly toasted

Optional Toppings

  • Mayonnaise
  • hot sauce
  • pickled jalapeños

Instructions

Cooking Steps

  • Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat, then add sliced onion and bell pepper.
  • Cook for 8-10 minutes until softened and slightly caramelized, then remove and set aside.
  • Add ground beef to the same skillet, breaking it apart and cooking until no longer pink (5-7 minutes).
  • Drain excess grease, then stir in garlic powder, salt, and black pepper with the beef.
  • Return cooked onions and peppers to the skillet with the beef; mix thoroughly and reduce heat to low.
  • Arrange provolone cheese slices over the mixture, cover, and melt for 1-2 minutes until gooey.
  • Spoon the cheesy beef mixture into toasted hoagie rolls and serve immediately.

Notes

For an extra kick, try adding a pinch of red pepper flakes with the seasonings. To keep hoagie rolls from getting soggy, lightly toast them before filling. This recipe is easily scalable; adjust ingredient quantities proportionally for more or fewer servings.
