  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 1 15-ounce can tomato sauce
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon brown sugar or to taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
  • 4-6 hamburger buns, toasted

Cooking Steps

  • Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat and cook the chopped onion until softened (5-7 minutes).
  • Add the ground beef to the skillet, break it apart, and cook until browned (8-10 minutes).
  • Drain any excess fat from the skillet.
  • Stir in the tomato sauce, ketchup, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, and garlic powder; mix well.
  • Simmer the mixture on low, covered, for 10-15 minutes until thickened, then season with salt and pepper.
  • While the sloppy joe mixture simmers, toast the hamburger buns.
  • Spoon the hot sloppy joe mixture onto the toasted buns, add any desired toppings, and serve immediately.

Notes

For extra flavor, you can add a pinch of red pepper flakes to the sloppy joe mixture. Serve with a side of coleslaw or fries for a complete meal.
