Equipment

  • Large skillet
  • Very large bowl
  • Crockpot
  • Oven-safe dish

Ingredients

Foundation

  • 12 cups Stale bread (sourdough, French, or white sandwich bread work beautifully), cubed
  • 3-4 cups Chicken or vegetable broth
  • 1/2 cup Butter (1 stick)

Aromatics & Flavor Builders

  • 1 large Onion finely chopped
  • 2 stalks Celery finely chopped
  • 2-3 cloves Garlic minced
  • 2 tablespoons total Fresh herbs (sage, thyme, parsley, rosemary), chopped

Seasonings

  • 1 teaspoon Salt or to taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon Black pepper or to taste
  • 1 teaspoon Poultry seasoning

Optional Enhancements

  • 2 large Eggs lightly beaten
  • 1 cup Cooked crumbled turkey (breakfast or Italian style)
  • 1 cup Mushrooms sliced

Instructions

Preparing Your Bread Base

  • Prepare bread by cutting stale bread into 1-inch cubes; if using fresh bread, dry it overnight on a baking sheet.

Sautéing Your Aromatics

  • Sauté aromatics by melting butter in a large skillet, cooking onions and celery until soft for 8-10 minutes, then adding minced garlic and herbs for 1-2 minutes until fragrant.

Combining Ingredients

  • Combine ingredients by transferring the sautéed mixture to a large bowl with bread cubes, seasonings, broth, and any optional additions like eggs, turkey, or mushrooms, then gently mix until moistened.

Slow Cooking to Perfection

  • Slow cook the stuffing by greasing a crockpot, transferring the mixture, covering, and cooking on high for 3-4 hours or low for 6-8 hours until heated through and edges are browned.

For a Golden-Brown Top (Optional)

  • For an optional golden top, transfer the cooked stuffing to an oven-safe dish and broil for 5-10 minutes, monitoring closely to prevent burning.

Notes

For best results, ensure your bread is truly stale to prevent soggy stuffing. If you prefer a crispy top, don't skip the optional broiling step, but watch it carefully as it can brown quickly.
