Ingredients
  

Main Ingredients

  • 12 large eggs
  • 0.5 cup milk
  • 4 cups day-old bread, cubed (e.g., sourdough, challah, or sandwich bread)
  • 1.5 cups shredded cheddar cheese divided
  • 1 cup cooked breakfast sausage, crumbled OR cooked bacon, crumbled optional
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 0.25 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
  • Spread the cubed day-old bread evenly at the bottom of the prepared baking dish.

Assembly

  • Sprinkle the cooked breakfast meat (if using) and about half (3/4 cup) of the shredded cheddar cheese over the bread.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, salt, and pepper until well combined.
  • Pour the egg mixture evenly over the ingredients in the baking dish.
  • Sprinkle the remaining 3/4 cup of cheese over the top.

Baking

  • Bake for 30-40 minutes, or until the casserole is set in the center and lightly golden brown on top.
  • Remove from the oven and let it rest for 5-10 minutes before slicing and serving.

Notes

For a richer casserole, you can add a splash of heavy cream to the egg mixture. You can also customize by adding vegetables like diced bell peppers, onions, or spinach.
