Amish Hamburger Steak Bake

Ingredients
  

Hamburger Steaks

  • 1 ½ lbs lean ground beef (80/20)
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • Salt to taste

Aromatics

  • 1 large onion thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil (or vegetable oil)
  • 1 cup sliced fresh mushrooms Optional

Sauce

  • 1 can cream of mushroom soup (10.75 oz)
  • 1 can cream of celery soup (10.75 oz)
  • 1 can beef broth (14.5 oz)
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon dried thyme

Instructions
 

Prepare the Hamburger Steaks

  • Gently mix ground beef with garlic powder, black pepper, and salt; form into 6-8 patties.

Sear the Patties

  • Heat olive oil in a skillet, sear patties for 2-3 minutes per side until browned, then set aside.

Sauté the Onions

  • Add remaining olive oil to the skillet, sauté sliced onions and optional mushrooms for 8-10 minutes.

Make the Sauce

  • Whisk together cream of mushroom soup, cream of celery soup, beef broth, garlic powder, black pepper, and dried thyme until smooth.

Assemble the Bake

  • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C), layer half the onions and mushrooms in a baking dish, top with patties, then pour sauce over, and finish with remaining onions and mushrooms.

Bake

  • Cover and bake for 30 minutes, then uncover and bake for another 15-20 minutes until bubbly and cooked through.

Rest and Serve

  • Let the casserole rest for 5-10 minutes before serving.

Notes

For best results, do not overmix the ground beef, as this can make the patties tough. You can serve this bake with mashed potatoes, rice, or noodles.
